Alfred Ackrill

This site is an introduction to the work of Alfred Ackrill. He was a builders labourer from Oldham in the North of England.  He was also a gifted and remarkable artist.

Alfred's work consisted of paintings of the industrial north where he lived, but also landscapes, seascapes and fantastic still lifes.

He was only "discovered" fourteen years after his death, when his son and daughter decided it was time the world looked at these wonderful paintings which were lying in their lofts and on top of wardrobes.

They approached Manchester Art Gallery, somewhere they had visited many times with their father.  To their delight the Gallery immediately recognised his talent and gave Alf a five month retrospective exhibition.

It was a success beyond all expectations with both critics and public alike, with over 100,000 visitors to the exhibition, many travelling hundreds of miles just to see it.  It was obvious from the mountain of comments received, that his work was truly loved and appreciated

Alfred Ackrill was a quiet, unassuming man who would have been amazed at such an outpouring of public appreciation of his work.  He would also have been very proud

There are a total of 93 paintings still in existence.  Just 30 have been exhibited so far. We look forward to introducing the remainder to the public as soon as we are able.  Therefore, more exhibition venues are now being investigated and information about these will be posted on this website.

Please bear with us. Galleries are often booked for some time in advance.
